St Christopher was the patron saint of travellers and it is said that his protection was given to transportation workers to keep them safe. They say he was a tall man with a hard face and all he wanted to do was work for the greatest king of all. So as the days went on he came to believe that Christ was the greatest king of all. He set off in search of Christ, but while looking for Christ he was baptized by a man he met who also told and taught him all about Jesus Christ. So now as a Christian he was to help people get across a dangerous river where lots of people had died trying to get to the other side. But due to Christopher’s huge size, crossing the river was less of a struggle for him so he was able to safely help the travellers cross the river.

Then a little boy walked to the edge of the river bank and asked Christopher if he would help him across to the other side. So Christopher picked up the boy and started to cross the river with him on his shoulders. Then as Christopher was walking though the water the boy became heavier and heavier for him to carry, it was like he was made of lead and Christopher could hardly carry the boy because he weighed so much. When they reached the other side Christopher said to the boy that he had become very heavy as he was carrying him, the boy then told Christopher that he was the child Christ and that the weight he felt on his shoulders represents the weight of the whole world. The boy then told Christopher to place his staff at the bank of the river and return the following day to see what had happened and this would be the proof that he was really Christ. So Christopher returned the next day to see that his staff had become a tree which had fruit growing on it, and this is how he got his name St Christopher because the meaning of the name Christopher is from the Greek word meaning carrier of Christ, famous bearer.

Nowadays people buy St Christopher’s as gifts for people or loved ones who are or will be travelling as a protector to keep them safe on their journey. Because St Christopher is the patron saint of travellers, on the back of some St Christopher pendants you will find them engraved with transport pictures of a car, boat and aeroplane. On the front there is an image of Christopher carrying the child Christ over the river. On some around the rim the words ‘Saint Christopher Protect Us’ is engraved on it. Some St Christopher’s are plain on the back so you can have them personally engraved with your own words, most St Christopher’s are round but you can get different shaped ones such as Oval St Christopher’s, Rectangle St Christopher’s and Octagonal St Christopher’s, in different sizes and in different metal types Sterling Silver St Christopher’s, 9ct Gold St Christopher’s and 9ct White Gold St Christopher’s.
